ARUM: MAYWEATHER CAN GO TO HELL, THE FIGHT IS OFF AS OF NOW

ARUM: MAYWEATHER CAN GO TO HELL, THE FIGHT IS OFF AS OF NOW

By Ronnie Nathanielsz
PhilBoxing.com

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, livid over the unconscionable demands of Floyd Mayweather Jr for pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao to undergo random blood tests as well as urine tests conducted by the US Anti Doping Agency before their planned March 13 fight told us late Wednesday morning, “is off as of now.”

Arum made it clear that Pacquiao who has a phobia for needles and extracting too much blood which weakens him said he would gladly agree to have a blood test before the initial press conference and after the fight, plus urinalysis anytime he wants. What more? asked Arum.

Arum said “doctors will tell you that blood-testing is not even sure anymore and urinalysis is the state-of-the-art testing for drugs. But they don’t want the fight which is what I suspected from the beginning or they want to torture Pacquiao to throw him off his game.”

The astute promoter said he told them “absolutely not. That’s where we stand and we are prepared to walk away. I’m not going to bully this kid and Freddie (Roach) is adamant about that point.”

Arum said “they can go to hell as far as I’m concerned including (Richard) Schaefer although I don’t think it’s his idea, I think its Floyd’s idea and we are going to go on and do something else. This is an absolute outrage.”

He said the Nevada State Athletic Commission under its highly respected executive director Keith Kizer is “beside themselves” over the Mayweather demands and said “their drug testing is the best in the world and it’s an insult to them.”

Arum questioned the motives and asked “who is this ignorant, illiterate kid demanding this. Who is he? This has never ever happened in professional boxing.”

Pacquiao, in a statement issued by his adviser Michael Koncz said he had always wanted athletes to serve as role models in every sport and to keep sports free from drugs and that he was willing to undergo tests as he has always done in the past and come clean. Koncz said “we wanted to do the fight because that’s what the people wanted but obviously Mayweather is scared and looked for a way out.”

In an email to www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said “Olympic style drug testing is not one blood test 30 days before the fight and one after the fight. It is random drug testing which would include somewhere between 3-5 blood tests and 8-12 urine tests taken during the period January 1 to March 15. Blood tests by the way are taken in a non-intrusive manner and are less than one tablespoon.”

Arum mentioned several issues that arose during the negotiations day after day. He pointed out that Mayweather “had no intention of coming in at 147” which is the welterweight limit and then said he didn’t want to fight for the WBO title and we said okay, if you come an ounce over 147 you are going to pay us $10 million. Then this all started.”

Pacquiao’s conditioning expert Alex Ariza responded to the Mayweather camps demand that the blood testing go all the way up to the weighin saying it was “ludicrous” pointing out that “there is nothing that they are going to find 24 hours before the fight that they cannot find five minutes after the fight. We are not refusing to give blood, we are not willing to give it that close to the fight.”

Ariza said he is convinced that Mayweather is “just posturing and the reality of the situation is Mayweather is looking for a reason to get out of this fight because Manny is going to give him the beating of a lifetime. He will sustain a beating that he never ever endured in his whole career in boxing. What he feels in his own small mind is that his legacy will go down being beaten by Manny Pacquiao.”

Arum all for Dallas deal

Arum all for Dallas deal

Promoter Bob Arum believes Dallas could still host Manny Pacquiao’s fight with Floyd Mayweather Jnr in March next year.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has tabled a guaranteed $25m offer to stage the fight at the opulent Cowboys Stadium, setting up a bidding war with the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

While the MGM could come up with a bigger offer based on closed circuit sales and the knock-on benefits of being in the gambling Mecca, the Dallas gate could be twice as big – and Arum likes the guarantee.

“I’m saying that Dallas is a real live possibility, and I have a fiduciary responsibility to Manny Pacquiao to get him the most money,” said Arum.

The Dallas deal looked dead when Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer, representing Mayweather, called off a trip to Texas last week.

But Arum insists all avenues should be explored ahead of what promises to be the biggest-grossing fight in the sport’s history.

“I think everybody has an obligation to see,” he added. “I know we can get the greatest offer in history from the Texas Stadium.

“My position is whoever has the best deal for those two fighters, that’s where I want the deal.”

Bob Arum turns Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations over to Top Rank’s Todd duBoef

Bob Arum turns Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations over to Top Rank's Todd duBoef

By David Mayo | The Grand Rapids Press

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao won’t fight at Cowboys Stadium, which, in and of itself, was not enough to anger Bob Arum into withdrawing from active participation in the negotiations.

The way Mayweather’s representative made the 11th-hour pronouncement that Dallas is out of the running was, however.

Arum has passed on the negotiating responsibilities for his company, Top Rank Inc., which represents Pacquiao, to Todd duBoef, the company’s president.

duBoef is Arum’s stepson and has been groomed for several years as the 78-year-old promoter’s successor as chief executive of the boxing promotional company.

In the broad scheme of things, the maneuver holds little significance, although it certainly is symbolic of Arum’s distaste for the way the Dallas dismissal happened, with Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions, telling him of the decision hours before their scheduled departure to meet with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Wednesday.

Schaefer — who represents Mayweather in the negotiations but is not empowered to make decisions unilaterally without the fighter’s involvement — did not respond to telephone messages Thursday. His administrative assistant said he would have no comment on any matters related to Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations until a final deal was struck.

Arum’s decision also probably is based, in some part, on his difficult history with Mayweather.

Arum frequently has said he would not allow personal dislike for the Grand Rapids native to interfere with negotiations for the fight, and his withdrawal could be designed for precisely that purpose.

Also Thursday, Pacquiao’s adviser, Michael Koncz, told The Los Angeles Times that an 11th-hour offer by Staples Center to host the fight probably is a non-starter because, by his side’s estimation, state taxation in California could cost the Filipino fighter between $3 million and $5 million.

Several other sites have been considered and dismissed, including the Congo, Dubai, Atlanta, Miami and New Orleans.

That leaves MGM Grand in Las Vegas as the clear-cut frontrunner — and the longer talks drag out for a fight just more than three months away, the more likely it becomes that MGM will host.

MGM GRAND HAS THE EDGE TO LAND PACQUIAO-MAYWEATHER FIGHT

MGM GRAND HAS THE EDGE TO LAND PACQUIAO-MAYWEATHER FIGHT

By Ronnie Nathanielsz
PhilBoxing.com

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes that at this point the MGM Grand has the edge in the bid to land the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather fight for the ages on March 13 although Dallas Cowboys owner Gerry Jones is vying for the right to stage the multi-million dollar fight at the new state-of-the-art $1.2 billion Cowboys stadium in Dallas, Texas.

New Orleans which initially evidenced interest in a bid to stage the fight hasn’t contacted the promoters in the last few days. However, Arum said “if they are still interested they’ll contact us and we (Arum, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and Ross Greenberg of HBO) will make a visit to New Orleans which is not too far from Dallas” which the trio will visit on Wednesday to meet with Jones.

Asked who he felt was the front-runner, Arum replied “I’ll have to say its Las Vegas because the fighters, most of their big fights have been in Las Vegas, it’s a great climate to do a fight but this is professional boxing and money talks.”

Arum clarified “if we get an incredible offer from Dallas and Jerry Jones then it will be incumbent upon Las Vegas to match it or come close.”

The astute Top Rank promoter noted that “the best weekend that they (Las Vegas) have had in months was the weekend of November 14 when Manny fought (Miguel) Cotto. The town was packed. There was a great buzz and when its around a boxing match the people come in. There is something subliminal about the fact that they spend a lot of money, not as much on the gambling but in the best restaurants, the nightclubs and they buy clothing so they had a phenomenal weekend and they know this fight will be even bigger.”

Arum said also that “many people coming to the fight would want to stay in the new city center because architecturally its such an incredible edifice.”

Pacquiao-Mayweather ticket to cost a fortune

Pacquiao-Mayweather ticket to cost a fortune

By NICK GIONGCO

A ringside seat to the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather super fight next year will amount to the annual income of a minimum wage earner.

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum told the Bulletin Sunday that a premium seat in the March 13, 2010 welterweight title fight will cost $2,500 (P117,500), while the cheapest will be sold at $500, assuming the fight is held at the 17,000-seat MGM Grand.

If the fight is held, say, at the 80,000-capacity Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the price of the seat would remain the same, while the inexpensive seat will be sold lower than $500.

Arum said a meeting with Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer, who represents Mayweather, will be held Monday followed by an inspection of the Cowboys Stadium near Dallas by him and Top Rank officials is scheduled On Wednesday.

“We would know the venue by the end of this week,” said Arum, stressing that billionaire Jerry Jones, who owns the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, is more than willing to put up a juicy offer that could rival even Las Vegas’ proposal.

The $2,500 appears to be the most expensive ticket to a boxing event as it is slightly higher than the top seat – $2,400 – that was peddled during the June 2002 heavyweight match between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson at the Pyramid Arena in Memphis.

Should Arum stick to the hefty price, it would be much higher than the $2,000 seat that was sold during the Oscar De La Hoya-Mayweather tiff that took place in May 2007.

Pacquiao and Mayweather are assured of $25 million each and their earnings could go up to as high as $40 million apiece depending on the pay-per-view sales.

BREAKING NEWS: PACQUIAO MEETS WITH ARUM!

BREAKING NEWS: PACQUIAO MEETS WITH ARUM!

By Dong Secuya
PhilBoxing.com

Words coming from Manila indicate that pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao has finally met with his promoter Bob Arum at the New World Renaissance Hotel in Makati more than an hour ago (13:00 Manila time).

While the world awaited with bated breath, Arum was left wondering the whole day yesterday if he will be able to meet his prized ward to discuss the biggest fight in boxing, Pacquiao vs Mayweather, when Pacquiao, after arriving in Manila from General Santos yesterday afternoon, snubbed his promoter and went directly to a location to shoot the remaining scenes of his upcoming movie ‘Wapakman’.

Pacquiao emerged from the hotel room composed and relaxed after the meeting with Arum but would not say what was agreed, if any, according to the source.

Arum has scheduled a press conference with ABS-CBN this afternoon to announce the partnership between Arum’s company, Top Rank, and Philippine network giant ABS-CBN. It is expected that Arum will also announce what had transpired with his meeting with the Filipino boxing hero.

Pacquiao, Mayweather camps quiet on deal

Pacquiao, Mayweather camps quiet on deal

By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines – Don’t expect to hear anything from Bob Arum or Richard Schaefer in the days or weeks ahead if it’s regarding the negotiations for Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“There’s a gag order and we have to respect it. We are not allowed to talk,” said Arum over the phone yesterday after sitting down and having lunch with Schaefer in Day One of the negotiations.

Arum said he can’t give out details regarding the negotiations which of course would center on how the purse, which could reach $150 million, should be divided between the two superstars.

“I can’t. I really can’t,” said the legendary promoter from Top Rank, who said he’s not even sure how long it would take for him and Schaefer, who’s representing Mayweather in the talks, to negotiate.

“I have no idea. Thanksgiving is coming up and I won’t be back here in my office until Monday,” said Arum from his headquarters in Las Vegas. He said he’s off to a much-deserved break in Colorado.

The gag order, according to Arum, will be in effect “until our negotiations are either finalized or terminated.”

He and Schaefer met in Las Vegas over lunch Monday to see to it whether the fight that everybody wants to see could take place next year. Reports said they’re looking at May 1 as a date for the fight.

But that would depend on Pacquiao’s political schedule because the reigning pound-for-pound champion is seeking a Congressional seat in the May 10 national elections in the Philippines.

Arum had earlier penciled March 13 as the date for Pacquiao’s next fight, in fact it’s already listed at www.boxrec.com, but Freddie Roach said if it’s Mayweather, March is out of the question.

“If it’s Mayweather, we need time to get ready for that fight. We have to come out with a real different style. It’s a whole different ballgame,” he said,

And he’s not even looking at a “tuneup” match by March if that’s what you can call a possible fight with whoever’s out there – like Shane Mosley, Andre Berto or Edwin Valero.

“If we get Mayweather, why risk losing that (tuneup) fight. I’d say he rest for a while, enjoy the holidays, run for elections, and the Congressman Manny Pacquiao will kick Mayweather’s ass,” said Roach.

For the meantime, the guessing game is on as to the venue of the Pacquiao-Mayweather if ever it takes place. Arum had said that just won’t happen in New York because of its high (15 percent) tax structure.

But there’s the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, a new one that could seat more than a hundred thousand, the Super Dome in New Orleans, another one in Vancouver, Canada, and a proposed outdoor arena that can be built in Las Vegas just for the fight.

The venue, however, will only be taken up seriously once the fight is sealed. For the meantime, there’s a “gag order,” and the world will just have to wait and see.

Pacquiao is the greatest boxer and I have seen them all, says Bob Arum

Pacquiao is the greatest boxer and I have seen them all, says Bob Arum

Manny Pacquiao was in extraordinary form last night, both inside the ring, where he dismantled Miguel Cotto to win a world title in a seventh different weight division (a record), and outside the ring, where he interrupted his jovial post-fight press conference to sing a love song. “I’m just ordinary,” the always humble Manny had said earlier in the proceedings. As a singer, perhaps. As a boxer, not a chance.

It is always hard to separate the reality from the fantasy in the world of professional boxing, especially when ageless circus barkers like Bob Arum are involved, but one of the many beauties about having Pacquiao around is that he makes everyone’s life easier.

He is hyperbole made flesh, the man for whom no claim is too outlandish. So it is that when Arum, who promotes the Filipino’s fights, steps up the microphone and says Pacquiao is the “Tiger Woods of boxing” those who are listening are inclined to give the suggestion a fair hearing. Likewise when Arum stood up and said, as he did in the aftermath of last night’s display, that Pacquiao is the greatest boxer he had ever seen “and I’ve seen them all, including Ali, Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard”, no one laughed, they simply started debating.

Is the Filipino that good? Well, the truth of it is we will never know. Cross-generational comparisons in sport are the every definition of futility– like trying to catch a deluge in a paper cup, as a wise songwriter once decreed.

Is he better than Ali? You might as well ask if Arkle was better than Sea The Stars. Same animal, different sport altogether.

Still, there are some things we can say about Pacquiao that are surely beyond debate, the first being that as a boxer he has exceeded all expectations, perhaps even his own. He certainly made fools of those, like Ricky Hatton, who suggested prior to last night’s contest at the GM Grand in Las Vegas that he would have neither the stamina to go the distance with Cotto, far less beat him.

Not only did he beat the Puerto Rican, he humbled him, just as he had humbled the aforementioned Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya in his two previous appearances in the same arena. Those victories illustrated Pacquiao’s ring mobility and hand-speed, securing his reputation as the most naturally gifted boxer of his generation. Last night’s fight proved he is also one of the toughest and strongest. As for the unofficial title best pound-for-pound fighter in the world? Well, the jury has all but made its decision, although wise counsel suggests that one more piece of evidence in required.

The mercurial Floyd Mayweather Jr was nowhere to be seen around the MGM Grand last night, but his presence was felt everywhere and it will be demanded when the world of boxing gathers assembles once again for one of these occasions. Pending the usual behind-the-scenes horse-trading and front-of-house finger-pointing, it is unimaginable that the American and the Filipino will not meet in the ring sometime within the next year. The appetite is too great for it not to happen, and so are the financial rewards for the two protagonists.

Who would win? Both will have their supporters, but if Pacquiao emerges victorious yet again Arum could step up to the microphone and describe his man as the Second Coming and no one will argue.

Arum predicts brutal ending

Arum predicts brutal ending

By DENNIS PRINCIPE

American promoter Bob Arum predicts a brutal ending in the world welterweight bout between Filipino Manny Pacquiao and defending champion Miguel Cotto this weekend.

Though Arum promotes both Pacquiao and the Puerto Rican Cotto, the astute promoter insists during an overseas telephone conversation with the Bulletin that he himself is perplexed with the possible outcome of the fight after seeing both fighters prepare for this bout.

Anybody who tells you now that they know for sure how it’s gonna end up, is not telling the truth,” said Arum “The reason this fight is creating so much attention is because of the fact that people who know boxing are baffled as to how this fight is going to turn out.”

Arum though sees the fight to be stopped in the later rounds but won’t be surprised if the fight lasts the distance that is set for 12-rounds at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I know how the fight is going to start and the question is can Miguel handle Manny’s speed early on and can Manny handle Miguel’s power early on?” said Arum. “They’re gonna both be aggressive in the beginning. If that doesn’t work for either of them, then you’ll see Miguel resorting to be a counter-puncher and Manny going on the attack.”

Arum believes his latest promotion might be one of the most successful promotions he has ever staged owing to the marketability of both Cotto and Pacquiao.

“What boxing always needs is a charismatic figure that people want to see and an opponent who can give him very tough battle,” said Arum “We have Manny Pacquiao as the charismatic figure in boxing and  Miguel Cotto as a tremendously powerful welterweight that stands in his way. That captures everyone’s imagination.”

Meantime, Pacquiao on Tuesday concluded his training at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood with a four-round sparring opposite Ray Beltran.

“He’s sharper than before and I don’t see him losing this bout,” said Beltran.

Beltran has been part of Pacquiao’s sparring partners in the Filipino’s bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, and Oscar De La Hoya.

Will Manny Pacquiao v Miguel Cotto be another Hagler-Hearns ?

Will Manny Pacquiao v Miguel Cotto be another Hagler-Hearns ?

By Gareth A Davies

Could Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto recreate 8 minutes of ring mayhem as Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns did 24 years ago ?

Promoter Bob Arum thinks it is possible.

Hagler v  Hearns, at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, in April 1985, is regarded by many as the most exciting eight minutes in fight history, with Hagler the winner by a technical knockout in the third round. It was Fight of the Year after both men went at it from the opening bell like men possessed.

Miguel Cotto against Manny Pacquiao brings together two fighters who are sporting icons in Puerto Rico and the Philippines respectively, and who are regarded as boxing’s No 3 and No 1 pound-for-pound, respectively, at present.

Cotto, 29, a two-weight world champion, has fought at welterweight for three years, and has been beaten only once in 35 contests, while Pacquiao, 30, attempts to win a seventh world title in a seventh weight division, which has seen him come up over eight years from flyweight to welterweight. He has been beaten twice in his 55-fight career, with two draws.

Although this contest is taking place at 145lbs, Cotto’s World Boxing Organisation welterweight (147lb) crown is on the table.

When Hagler and Hearns met in 1985, for the WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight titles, Hagler was 30, and had lost only twice, much earlier in his career, while Hearns was 26 and had been beaten just once, stopped in the 14th round by Sugar Ray Leonard.

Arum, who promotes both Pacquiao and Cotto, visited both training camps – in Baguio City in the Philippines and Tampa, Florida.

“The way Manny and Miguel are talking about it, it could be like the three-round war between Hagler and Hearns,” the veteran promoter Arum told Telegraph Sport.  “The conventional wisdom is that Cotto is best when he’s aggressive, but I don’t know if he feels he can be aggressive with this guy from the get-go. But if Cotto is aggressive, though, it could be a Hagler v Hearns all over again.”

Book smart and street smart, Arum at top of boxing

Book smart and street smart, Arum at top of boxing

NEW YORK (AP)—The most powerful man in boxing is a Harvard-educated tax lawyer and a street-savvy businessman, a Talmudic scholar with a penchant for four-letter expletives.

He’s been called generous and charming, ruthless and conniving, yet he’s universally respected for spending the better part of five decades atop a pitiless sport.

“Bob Arum is one of the 10 smartest people I’ve ever met, not one of the 10 smartest boxing people I’ve met,” says longtime HBO executive Seth Abraham, who has known Arum as both a businessman and friend. “He combines, which is extra formidable, traditional book smarts with street smarts, common sense and experience.

“You put those things together and he is truly brilliant.”

The former Justice Department attorney had seen only a few fights before he promoted one, and never envisioned a lifetime spent just outside the ring. But as he approaches his 78th birthday, having guided the careers of everyone from Muhammad Ali to Oscar De La Hoya, Arum closes in on one more masterful achievement in a professional life full of them.

His Las Vegas-based promotional company, Top Rank, will stage the biggest and most lucrative fight of the year when Manny Pacquiao meets Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas.

Both of the charismatic fighters are promoted by Top Rank, part of a stable that includes nearly a dozen world champions. Indeed, while rival promoters like Don King have fallen by the wayside, and upstarts like De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions try to claim their piece of the business, Arum is proving once more that he’s the best in the game.

“When you get to be my age, you appreciate more the things that mattered to you when you were coming up,” he says, folding his hands in the cozy dining room of the Friar’s Club in Midtown Manhattan, where he spoke to The Associated Press at length about his life and career.

“Right now, this is something that keeps me going, keeps me young.”

The son of an accountant, Arum excelled in school before landing a job at a prestigious Manhattan law firm. He soon went to work in the U.S. attorney’s office, where he was ordered to seize the assets of a heavyweight fight between Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson.

The experience made Arum enamored of boxing—or, more specifically, the money in it.

Arum’s break came when he was introduced to Muhammad Ali. The idea was that Arum would help promote a fight and then continue on as his lawyer, but they wound up spending more than 20 years together. Ali became a legend and Arum a legend-maker.

“I could tell who was a good person, who was not, who was a selfish person, and who was an OK person, and who was a great person,” Arum says. “And Ali was a great person. I’m talking about what was in his heart of hearts—what was he deep down, what was he made of.”

His opinion of Ali never wavered, even when Don King came on the scene and stole him away to promote the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” fight against George Foreman.

In the 1980s, not long after Ali retired, Arum had the foresight to see he could make more money with less risk by turning his attention to lighter weights. He signed dozens of the best fighters and began pitting them against each other, often under the twinkling lights of Caesar’s Palace.

Arum’s business acumen showed in his mastery of closed-circuit television, the precursor to pay-per-view, and his knowledge of cable. From 1980-95, Top Rank oversaw the longest-running weekly boxing series in TV history on ESPN, and agreements with Spanish language channels have helped grow the Hispanic market.

“Bob is unmatched in the business of boxing,” says Rich Rose, who was in charge of sports at Caesar’s Palace during the 1980s. “He may not be the most flamboyant guy, but he gets it, and he’s not afraid to do something that’s a little off the chart.”

That includes using modern-day “bobbysoxers” and other creative ploys to help build a charismatic lightweight gold medalist into the Golden Boy.

With the wily promoter pulling the strings, Oscar De La Hoya became a crossover star in just a few years. He went from the undercard of main events to headlining his own, on his way toward 10 titles in six weight divisions during a Hall of Fame-worthy career.

He also became a prime example of how virtually everyone who runs across Arum has a run-in with him. Their relationship soured over the years, strained even more when De La Hoya began building a rival promotional company. The rift runs so deep that De La Hoya declined multiple interview requests for this story, and Arum had few positive things to say about him.

“Oscar was an uneducated kid who was very good looking, who was a lot better fighter than he turned out to be,” the promoter says, shrugging. “I don’t want to demean him, but when you talk about substance as a person, he was just ordinary.”

That’s only scratching the surface of how controversial Arum can be.

Asked about mixed martial arts leeching away his sport’s fan base, Arum replied: “Our audience in boxing is ethnic: Hispanic, Filipino, Puerto Rican, Mexican. … UFC are a bunch of skinhead white guys watching people in the ring who also look like skinhead white guys.”

It was vintage Aurm.

Several years ago, he was fined by the Nevada Athletic Commission for allegedly bribing the IBF to rank Axel Schulz so that Foreman could defend his title against him—which Arum admitted to being “a stupid, wrong thing to do.” In January 2004, the FBI raided the Top Rank office over match-fixing allegations, a case that was closed with no evidence of wrongdoing.

“You have to be a bad guy sometimes,” says former champion Ray Leonard. “You have to have that thick skin, and Bob has that. Nothing hurts Bob. He dealt with Don King, with casinos and venues and things of that nature, and he’s still kicking.”

Mayweather’s return boosts Pacquiao-Cotto bout

Mayweather's return boosts Pacquiao-Cotto bout

By J. Michael Falgoust, USA TODAY

No one will ever confuse Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Bob Arum as friends. The ex-welterweight champion’s former promoter, however, will give him this much: Mayweather’s successful comeback from an almost two-year layoff last month has boosted Manny Pacquiao’s Nov. 14 bout with Miguel Cotto.

“Mayweather’s return has gotten people, particularly the people who follow Mayweather, energized. Those people are going to watch this fight because the winner is a potential (opponent) for Mayweather,” says Arum, whose Top Rank Inc. promotes Pacquiao and Cotto.

A month before the year’s most anticipated fight, Las Vegas is almost sold out for Pacquiao-Cotto. Only about 90 high-end seats remain at the 16,500-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena ($9 million gate) and the 1,000 tickets for local closed circuit are gone.

Pacquiao is guaranteed $10 million while Cotto’s take is $6.5 million. If the bout reaches 1 million pay-per-view buys, Pacquiao’s take would increase to about $20 million while Cotto would draw $12 million.

Pacquiao’s two-round destruction of Ricky Hatton for the junior welterweight championship in May sold just less than 900,000. Mayweather scored a unanimous decision vs. Juan Manuel Marquez, surpassing that total to reach 1 million buys to become 2009’s No. 1 PPV show.

Arum says there’s no rematch clause for Pacquiao-Cotto but both fighters have extended their promotional deals; Cotto until the end of 2011 and Pacquiao, whose current deal ends in November 2010, through 2012.

Bob Arum’s Insights on Pacquiao-Mayweather

Bob Arum’s Insights on Pacquiao-Mayweather

By Danny Rolodex

Top Rank head honcho Bob Arum shares his insights on the matter revolving around two of today’s headlining boxers: Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

“I don’t think (Pacquiao-Mayweather) will happen within the next year because of all of Mayweather’s posturing, the trash talk.  That impedes any realistic negotiations. It would just be too difficult,” Arum expressed his doubts on the dream match up.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach also downplayed the likelihood of a clash in the ring between his ward and Mayweather.  “It seems like there’s a lot of things working against this fight ever happening,” Roach dishes his thoughts on the matter.

Making things more difficult is the issue of purse split.  Neither boxer wants to settle for a 50-50 sharing of the pot.

When asked if Pacquiao could handle Mayweather in view of the latter’s lopsided demolition job against Juan Manuel Marquez, Arum gave a simple analogy to stress his point.  “Just because A beats B and B beats C, it doesn’t mean A will necessarily beat C.”

Point well taken, Bob.  It’s all up to Pacquiao and Mayweather to settle the score once and for all.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao Eyed for March 13, 2010?

Mayweather vs Pacquiao Eyed for March 13, 2010?

by Mark Vester, BoxingScene.com

Top Rank’s Bob Arum told the Manila Bulletin on Monday that Manny Pacquiao’s 2010 debut would fall in the second week of March. The working date of March 13 is being tossed around. Arum warned that Pacquiao, and everyone else, should not look past the November 14 clash with WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.

If Pacquiao is able to beat Cotto, Arum told the paper that he plans to begin negotiations with Mayweather’s camp. If Arum is unable to reach a deal within a few weeks, he plans to find another opponent for Pacquiao. The negotiations are going to be very tough. Both Pacquiao and Mayweather have taken a hard line with the money. Both are asking for a bulk of the money. Both of them have refused a 50-50 split.
